A Letter from the Executive Director

May 2026

Some people find their way to the work they were meant to do early. I found mine twice.

The first time was in seventh grade. My first job wasn't babysitting or running errands - it was tutoring. A young boy sat across from me, struggling with words on a page, and something in me fully engaged. By the time we finished, some weeks later, he could read. I didn't have a framework for what that moment meant. I just knew it mattered to both of us.

The second time was a few weeks ago - a Monday afternoon in our program room at Neighborhood Homework House, filling in as a SuperSub - a tutor that fills in when needed. The energy was different from any boardroom or strategy session I've sat in over the past twenty years. It felt youthful, hopeful, vibrant; it reminded me exactly why I said yes to this role.

My name is Sereyna Avila, and I am honored to serve as Executive Director of Neighborhood Homework House.

I'm a San Gabriel Valley native whose path through this region - from my university years in Azusa to nearly a decade of work in neighboring Glendora - eventually brought me full circle to the students and families I now have the privilege of serving. This community isn't a stop on my journey. It's where my journey leads.

Before joining NHH, I spent more than two decades in corporate leadership, including a decade as Vice President at a multi-million-dollar firm - and more recently founded Amposta Consulting, a woman- and minority-owned organizational development practice. I've built my career around creating cultures where people feel seen, supported, and set up to succeed. At NHH, that work takes its most meaningful form.

I stepped into this role with deep respect for the foundation already in place and a clear sense of where we're headed. My commitment to you - whether you're a family we serve, a community partner, a donor, or someone just learning about us - is that NHH will continue to grow with integrity, lead with purpose, and stay rooted in the relationships that make this work possible.

If you've been looking for a place to give your time, your resources, or your voice, I hope you'll consider us. This summer, we're working to keep our students learning and supported when school is out.

I look forward to building something meaningful together.

With gratitude,

Sereyna Avila
