Neighborhood Building

ONHH believes that family and neighborhood are two of the most critical components which enable our students to thrive. To this end, we provide support in several key areas.

Parent Committee

The Parent Committee's mission is to facilitate community support within our neighborhoods, encourage families, provide guidance, and to serve as a connector between Homework House, parents, and neighbors.

Values

  • Learning about our children and what helps them be their best self
  • Learning what helps us to become our own best selves
  • Appreciating volunteers who work with our children
  • Modeling how to be a positive neighborhood member for our children

Objectives

  • Encourage other parents in their parenting
  • Serve as a resource to neighbors
  • Organize parent volunteer service which ONHH requires for student participation
  • Plan neighborhood building events to create community and provide structured recreation for families
  • Build and encourage neighborhood leaders

Parent Seminars

As one of its primary support mechanism, ONHH facilitates seminars in our parents' home language. These seminars equip them with the tools to ensure pursuit of higher education in their families, provide necessities (food, clothing, housing, medical, etc.), and expand their knowledge of U.S. systems.

Support Areas

Academic

Financial management, computer literacy, English as second language (Rosetta Stone), language development resources for children, health/nutrition

Social

Identifying gang behaviors (police assistance), food banks and offerings, Posada potluck, community beautification, family movie night, community garden

Spiritual

ONHH partners with the Azusa Ministerial Association regarding neighborhood engagement during holidays
